How to Set Up Moving Average Alerts

To create an alert, go to the timetotrade CHARTS page, and enter the ticker symbol for the stock or currency pair that you wish to follow. This will take you to the chart / alert creation page. The system is defaulted to show a 6 month price chart, based on a 1 day interval period. From the chart "settings" menu select the Moving Average from the drop down list to show the price chart overlayed with the Moving Average indicator.

On timetotrade's Moving Average Charts, the price is represented by a dark green line and the Moving Average by a red line. The Moving Average default period is 12. You can adjust the default period and interval parameter values to find the best fit between price movement and the Moving Average Indicator, to suit your personal trading strategy.

To the right hand side of timetotrade's price and technical indicator charts are a set of "Alert Trigger" buttons.

image: Positive Cross Over Alert Button.png Moving Average Cross-Over Alert Trigger (Positive)
Click the positive Moving Average cross over trigger button to create alerts to notify you when the price crosses above the Moving Average
image: Negative Cross Over Alert Button.png Moving Average Cross-Over Alert Trigger (Negative)
Click the negative Moving Average cross over trigger button to create alerts to notify you when the price falls below the Moving Average
image: Alert Button Percentage Increase.png Moving Average Percentage Increase Alert Trigger
Click the Moving Average percentage increase trigger button to create alerts to notify you when Moving Average value increases by a specified percentage within a certain period of time (eg the Moving Average increases by 10%)
image: Alert Button Percentage Decrease.png Moving Average Percentage Decrease Alert Trigger
Click the Moving Average percentage decrease trigger buttons to create alerts to notify when you Moving Average value decreases by a specified amount within a certain period of time (eg the Moving Average decreases by 10% percent)

To create a Moving Average alert, just click on the appropriate Trigger Button at the right hand side of the Moving Average chart. There are no programming languages to learn, no spreadsheets or complex formulas to write. Just click a button, enter your parameters, "activate" and your alert is created.

Simple!

Moving Average Rising Alerts

To create an alert that will be triggered and notify you when the Moving Average rises above a certain value, just click the Moving Average "Rising Threshold" Trigger button:

A text box will appear on the chart.

Step 1: Input the value you wish to be alerted that the Moving Average has risen above

Step 2: Click the "create trigger" button:

The alert conditon will then appear in the "Alert Creation" box on the right hand side of the chart page.

Step 3: Enter the alert message you wish to receive

Step 4: Click the "activate" button.

And that's it! Your alert is created. It really is that simple.

The next time the Moving Average rises above your pre-defined value, you will receive an alert to your email, instant messanger or cell phone.

You can customise the alerts further to suit you: for example you can edit the alert message you will receive, add additional alert trigger conditions, set the alert to re-activate itself once triggered and amend which email or mobile phone you would like the alert sent to.

You can use Moving Average "Threshold Triggers" to build an alert to notify you when the Moving Average rises above or falls below a value defined by you. For example, if your investment rule is to sell a stock when its Moving Average tests a resistance level such as between 30 and 31 on the MSFT daily interval chart as shown above, you would use the Rising Threshold Trigger button to create an alert to notify you when this rule has been met. In this example we selected the Rising Threshold Trigger and entered the value $30.50. When the Moving Average rises above the resistance level at $30.50 you will be notified.

Moving Average Falling Alerts

To create an alert that will be triggered and notify you when the Moving Average falls below a certain value, just click the Moving Average "Falling Threshold" Trigger button, input the value you wish to be alerted that the Moving Average has fallen below, click the "add trigger" button and "activate" and customise the alert as discussed above.

The next time the Moving Average falls below your pre-defined value, you will receive an alert to your email, instant messanger or cell phone.

Price Crossing Above Moving Average Alerts

To create an alert that will be triggered when the price (dark blue line) rises above the Moving Average (red line), just click on the "Rising Crossover" Trigger button, as shown below:

Image:Moving Average Alert 8.png

As before, click "add trigger" and "activate". The next time the price crosses above the Moving Average you will be notified by an alert sent to your email, instant messanger or cell phone.

Again, you can customise the alert to suit you: for example you can edit the alert message you will receive, add further alert trigger conditions and amend which email and/or mobile phone you would like the alert sent to. Click on the Moving Average "Crossover" Trigger Buttons to create an alert to notify you the next time the Moving Average rises above, or falls below, the Price. For example, if your trading strategy is based on buying and selling a stock when the price rises above, or falls below the Moving Average, you would use the Rising and Falling Crossover Trigger Buttons to create an alert which will be triggered next time your rules are met.

Price Falling Below Moving Average Alerts

To create an alert that will be triggered and notify you when the price (dark blue line) falls below the Moving Average (red line), just click the "Falling Crossover" Trigger button, and activate and customise the alert as discussed above.

Image:Moving Average Alert 9.png

The next time the price falls below the Moving Average, you will receive an alert to your email, instant messanger or cell phone.

Moving Average Percentage Break Out Alert

To create an alert that will be triggered and notify you when the Moving Average increases by a certain percentage within a specified time interval, just click the Moving Average "% Break Out" Trigger button, input the value you wish to be alerted that the Moving Average has increased by, and activate and customise the alert to suit.

Image:Moving Average Alert 10.png

The next time the Moving Average increases by your pre-defined value within a specified time interval, you will receive an alert to your email, instant messanger or cell phone.

Moving Average Percentage Pull Back Alert

To create an alert that will be triggered and notify you when the Moving Average falls by a certain value, just click the Moving Average "% Pull Back" Trigger button, input the percentage you wish to be alerted that the Moving Average has fallen by, activate the alert and customise to suit.

Image:Moving Average Alert 11.png

The next time the Moving Average falls by x percent within the specified time interval, you will receive an alert to your email, instant messanger or cell phone.

The Moving Average "Percentage Breakout" and "Percentage Pullback Triggers" can be used to create an alert to notify you when there is a percentage increase or decrease within a given time interval. These triggers are commonly used to notify you when there is a sudden change in momentum. For example, if you wanted to be notified the next time the Moving Average of SGP increases by 5% over a 1 week interval: you would set the chart interval period to one week, then click on the Percentage Breakout Trigger Button, enter the value 5 in the % text box and click the "double arrow" button. And that's it. The alert is created.

Adjusting the Parameters

The chart parameters and interval period displayed on the chart as you click the "Alert Trigger" buttons to create your alert are the same parameters and interval period that will be used to check when your alert conditions are met.

If eg, you are looking at a 12 day Moving Average chart on a 1 day interval period when you are creating your alert, then timetotrade will check to see if the 12 day Moving Average conditions are met at the end of each trading day. If eg, you create your alerts on a 20 day Moving Average chart with a 1 minute interval period, then timetotrade will check to see if the 20 day Moving Average alert conditions are met every minute - at the end of each minute interval period.

You can adjust the Moving Average parameters and interval values to find the best fit between price movement and the MACD indicator to suit.

image: Create Alert 2.png

To change the period enter your preferred values into the "period" text boxe, then press the 'refresh' button to update the charts. To save your changes as your default chart setting, click on the 'save' button to the right hand side of the chart "settings" menu.

Multi-Condition Alerts

timetotrade can also be used to create alerts on Price and Volume as well as the technical indicators: Stochastic, RSI, Bollinger Bands and Moving Averages.

Once you are familiar with creating basic alerts you can use timetotrade's advanced features to customise your alerts to suit you. You can build compound alerts containing multiple trigger conditions against price and multiple technical indicators; for example: you could set up rule that will trigger an alert to be sent to you when the share price falls below a defined value followed by the stochastic increasing above 20 and a positive MACD crossover.

You can also edit the alert message you will receive and you can specify where particular alerts are to be sent - to your email and/or mobile phone or PDA.
