Step 1: Select the chart that you would like to create an alert for
When you have decided upon an investment strategy for a chart you can set up alerts to notify you of when your investment rules are met. Firstly use the drop down menu as illustrated below, to select the chart type that you would like to create an alert for.
Step 2: Select an alert trigger
Now select a trigger icon by simply clicking on it. For more information on the trigger, hover the mouse pointer over the trigger button or go to the Chart tab for detailed information on each of the charts and their associated triggers.
Step 3: Input any trigger parameters required
After clicking on a trigger a description of the trigger will appear below the chart. Some triggers require you to input values in the relevant text boxes which will appear below the chart. When you have input the relevant information, either press the "Add Trigger" button or the “One Click” button to process the alert; alternatively press the "Cancel" button or another trigger if you want to change your mind. An example is shown in the following image:
- 1. Enter the value the price must rise above
- 2. Choose an interval period based on how frequently you want to have your alert conditions checked. For example, if you select an interval period of '1 day', then the alert conditions will be checked at the end of the day based on the end of day close price; if alternatively you select an interval period of for example '1 minute', then your alert conditions will be checked every 1 minute during market trading hours
- 3. You could now "cancel" creating the alert
- 4. If you wish to used the advanced alert settings or create an alert with multiple trigger conditions click "add trigger"
- 5. If you don't need to add other alerts or use the advanced setting, then use the "one click" button and your alert is instantly active.
Step 4: Creating alerts with multiple triggers
You can create alerts that contain multiple rules (triggers). For example you can set up an alert that will notify you if the 1 week Stochastic indicator is less than 20%, followed by a 1 day MACD crossover, by simply selecting additional triggers using the previous steps. Each alert trigger or rule that you have created will appear on the right hand side of the screen where you can edit it further.
- 1. You can enter a personal message here to remind you why you created the alert.
- 2. If you prefer not to enter a personal message you will receive this alert description.
- 3. You can change the order of the alert conditions by clicking on these arrows.
- 4. You can specify in what order you would prefer the alert conditions to me met, either in any sequence or in the listed sequence.
- 5. You can also specify the maximum time that is allowed to lapse between the first and last alert condition being met. If the time between the first and last alert trigger conditions being met is not met within the selected time frame the alert will not be triggered.
- 1. You can now activate the alert by clicking on the 'activate' button.
- 2. Alternatively you can save the alert for future use; it will be saved as a paused alert.
- 3. If you do not want to use the alert press the 'delete' button.
- 4. To edit the 'advanced' features click on this button.
Advanced Alert Features
- 1. Private investors can change the default notification methods by clicking on the appropriate tick boxes.
- 2. If you create an alert that will re-occur each time your investment conditions are met using the drop down 'sleep period' menu. After alert conditions are met, the alert will sleep for a period of time that you define using the drop down sleep menu before it is re-activated. For example if you want to be notified every time a stock trades below a threshold price, you can use this function.
- 3. Once you have finished editing the features, click 'save'.
Step 5: 'One Click' alert creation
To dramatically speed up the alert creation process, you can also use the ‘One Click’ feature. If for example you simply want to be notified when there is a MACD cross-over, simple click the ‘One Click’ button beside the trigger button, and that’s it the alert is created and activated immediately.
- 1. The one click button for a positive MACD crossover.
